#Recycling - A pile of used water sachets can become a desk where Ghanaian pupils study for years. Collected plastic sachets, bottles, wrappers and bags are sorted, cleaned and heated. The softened material is compressed or moulded into strong panels, which are assembled into classroom desks/seats.

"Doch aus alten Aludosen werden meist keine neuen – auch wenn die Werbeabteilungen großer Getränkekonzerne versuchen, das zu vermitteln. In den meisten Recyclingprozessen wird unterschiedlicher Aluschrott zusammengeschmolzen – das Ergebnis dieses sogenannten Downcyclings ist schlechteres Aluminium, aus dem zumeist keine Dosen hergestellt werden. Dafür bräuchte es nämlich eine reinere Qualität, die nur bei konsequenter Mülltrennung erzielt wird.
Rohstoffe aus Afrika
Und so wird weiterhin neues Bauxit, aus dem Aluminium gewonnen wird, unter umweltschädlichen Rahmenbedingungen abgebaut. Die umfangreichsten Reserven der Welt schlummern in den Böden Westafrikas. Dort werden Regenwälder für die Gewinnung abgeholzt und Luft und Flüsse dabei verschmutzt. Indigene Völker werden umgesiedelt, und seltene Arten wie Schimpansen durch den Abbau zurückgedrängt."
Zudem fallen bei der Herstellung von einer Tonne Aluminium bis zu vier Tonnen giftiger Rotschlamm an. Bei dem Kolontár-Dammbruch in Ungarn vor elf Jahren wurde das Land von einer Million Kubikmeter Rotschlamm überschwemmt und verwüstet. 150 Menschen wurden verletzt, zehn starben."

Just found out about this amazing example of #manuscript #recycling . The whole manuscript is made up from the margins of an earlier liturgical manuscript, cut out and rearranged (hence the unusual format), the (mostly) blank margins then used to copy various magical texts in the mid 16th century.
