Happy International Women’s Day! Acknowledging the hands of countless women in the needle trades through the lens of the women in Norman Hartnell’s embroidery workroom. Their legacy survives in the glittering gowns they embellished. Dress 1950s #RCT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Into final edits for my new book Dressing the Queen and thinking of the many many hands whose skills contributed to royal wardrobes past. Embroiderers at the Royal School of Needlwork such as Ruby Essam, Rosina Smith, designer Nellie Wichelo. Thinking of them today #RCT #RSN #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Interesting to read about the exhibition next year marking the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth. My book Dressing the Queen comes out next year as well. It has a different focus, the many makers to the royal wardrobe over 200 years. Here Hartnell, 1961 #RCT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

This is a particular favourite of mine, one of the State gowns designed for Queen Elizabeth II to wear during her 1967 visit to Canada. It is smooth of line with a sprinkling of blue beaded maple leaves circling the drop waisted princess line #RCT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
A three quarter view of a white and blue princess line dress. The sleeveless bodice is white and the long plain skirt is blue. There is a band of white and blue beaded maple leaves circling below the waist

Off I go to #DerbyBookFest where I shall be lifting the veil and revealing some of the stories of makers. It includes Hardy Amies who designed this yellow satin beauty for the Queen in 1961. This might be a bit OTT for a daytime talk so I’ll go for something more suitable #RCT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

This was a lovely inclusion in Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style. A poodle skirt by Californian designer Juli Lynne Charlot featuring her signature appliquéd figures and animals. The Princess wore it to a square dance in Ottawa in 1951, a carefree moment captured here #RCT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Packing for London and tomorrow I am heading to the press view of Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style at the King’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace. Excited to see the work of some of those who feature in Dressing the Queen! #RCT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

For some reason this is one of the most memorable of Queen Elizabeth’s ensembles for me. I was only three years old when she wore it for her Silver jubilee in 1977 so perhaps I have some childhood recollection of it. It was designed by Hardy Amies #RCT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

The shape of Hardy Amies’s 1979 gown is an effective one, shaped here and there but with fullness in the sleeve, perfect for the Queen’s visit to Bahrain that year. A tangerine dream with gold repeat #RCT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
