An older watercolour drawing from when I used to make frequent trips to sketch in London. This shows the Embankment with lots of pigeons, a pavement artist and a couple of Japanese young women on one of the benches. This was sold at an exhibition. #art #pleinair #London #Thames #watercolour

One of many Cambridge street watercolours I did 30-40 years ago. Working on the spot uniquely preserves memories and feelings. The shop signs at that time in Green St were extravagantly beautiful and the passers by were sketched in quickly. Still have this one. #fineart ##pleinair #Cambridge
On the spot watercolour drawing of Green Street, Cambridge (with Indian ink using a dip pen). I loved the extravagant shop signs but wasn't so keen on my rendering of the Halifax Building Society sign and I don't think I ever exhibited this one. However, on digging it out of a storage portfolio I decided I liked it after all. Cambridge was a nicer place then with more character. Many much loved shops have disappeared, replaced by eateries.

Watercolour of gardens in #Winchester with the cathedral in the background. This was done on one of several sketching visits in the '90s. You can soak up history in Winchester which has a wonderful atmosphere, dank and timeless, very nostalgic for me. #watercolour #pleinair

Sketched in a riverside garden in Hemingford Abbots, Cambs, a collection of garden objects with a creative display of plants (see alt text for more description). Watercolour and Indian ink done on the spot with no later reworking. #art #watercolour #Cambridgeshire #pleinair
Watercolour drawing of garden objects in a riverside garden in Hemingford Abbotts, a display of sempervivums, aeoniums, fuchsias and pelargoniums including a wire and straw horse alive with botanical colour. Also a wrought iron bike and a small angelic figure with flowers, and a head of Buddha.

One of my favourite old watercolours, bringing back memories of exploring the Hampshire coast by bus or train with sketch pad. This was done at beautiful Bosham in 1970 on cheap paper, catching the sun going down over Chichester harbour - see alt text #watercolour #Bosham #Chichester #pleinair
A sketchpad watercolour done from Bosham as the sun went down one evening in 1970. Not sure exactly where I sat but I think the church across the water is St Nicholas at Itchenor (the spire is a little more squat than depicted here). I think G and I were with an old friend and we went for beers in a nearby pub (the Berkeley Arms? Probably a bit too posh for scruffy arty types now). I didn't have a car then so it was bus or train plus a walk.

Two of my watercolour drawings of the Warrior, Portsmouth. These were both done (plus others) sitting on the shore near the dockyard entrance in the early '90s. The first one was sold and the second one is a rather dull photo of the original #art #watercolour #Portsmouth #Warrior #pleinair

A woman writing on Eastbourne beach with the pier in the background. Some large-looking gulls are looking disappointed she hasn't got a bag of chips for them to steal. it was great to explore Eastbourne and bring a sketch home. #art #pleinair #watercolour #Eastbourne

Finished painting! The sun stayed out long enough to capture the iconic timber-framed home of @tannerswines in #Shrewsbury. There is so much history in these 15th-century beamsโ€”it felt like painting a piece of the townโ€™s soul. See my previous post how it was started. #pleinair #ShrewsburyArt

My watercolour from 1994 painted sitting on Eastney beach, Portsmouth. I love the memory that it captures. This pontoon is where one boarded the little ferry that my uncle Bobby skilfully guided across to Hayling Island through the fast flowing water. See alt text. #Portsmouth #Eastney #pleinair
This is the pontoon where one used to board the ferry at Eastney, Portsmouth, to cross the fast-flowing waters to Hayling Island. I sat on the beach in 1994 to paint this and I remember a goat was tethered nearby. It's unlikely that we will visit Portsmouth again but this was particularly memorable because the coxswain of the boat was my uncle Bobby Baker, one of my father's brothers. He was a lovely, good-humoured man, ex-naval. We had a chat with him but I think that was on an earlier occasion when we bought tickets and went over to the island.
