Briend points out that in a mother’s being up and about, the effects of gravity, that is to say, of the weight of the fetus on the mother’s internal system, has a negative effect on the hydrostatic pressure in the veins. Both of these factors of reduced arterial and decreased blood flow in the veins are especially impactful for the growth of the prenate during the last few weeks of gestation. The conclusion is that uprightness of posture had adverse effects on the neonate and its mother at birth, in creating the most difficult births of humans among all planetmates; but also in the last month of gestation, in creating such a reduction in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus as to cause it to radically abate its ability to continue growing. Veins which remove the waste products of food conversion are pressed upon as well. With blood vessels compressed, blood flow to the fetus is reduced, while the mother is standing, especially, but in other positions as well, except the lateral position. This involves lying on one’s side, hence it is not a position frequently adopted.
