Alrighty folks, here we go! My first foray into intro-level undergrad teaching since LLMs hit the scene, so here's where I landed for an AI policy. Many thanks to @cjdenial.bsky.social @johannamellis.bsky.social and all the others who've shared theirs over the last few weeks #ai #pedagogy
How we will (not) be using technology: As the presence of various digital devices and tools increases in our everyday lives, it is correspondingly important to carve out space for unmediated human interaction with our colleagues & ourselves free from their temptations & distractions. This seminar will be such a space. To facilitate our collective presence & allow you to develop your own critical capacities, this will be a technology-free class. This means that laptops, tablets, & phones should be silenced & stowed, except when specified otherwise. For the same reasons, large language models, aka generative “AI” tools (ChatGPT, Grammarly, Claude, etc.) may not be used in any capacity in this course. There are many reasons both practical & ethical to be skeptical about allowing these tools into a learning space, from their unreliability to their impact on users’ cognitive abilities, their environmental consequences, & their origins in stolen intellectual property (including mine and that of many of your other professors!). Perhaps most importantly for a writing seminar, LLMs are explicitly designed to produce “middling” results: as probability machines, their purpose is to produce text that is as much like already-existing text as possible. This is the precise antithesis of our purpose here, which is to help you develop your own unique voice as a thinker and a writer. You will have many opportunities to learn to use these tools in other classes. But all the research to date on this emerging technology shows that using them effectively requires strong critical reading, writing, & reasoning skills to assess their outputs. This course is designed to develop those skills. To ensure that all seminar members have access to a set of typed notes, there will be one designated note-taker for each class period to take notes in a shared document linked through Canvas. To protect our collective freedom of expression & personal privacy, class discussions may not be recorded.
