I, too, would like to have a go at the new Spinosaurus soon, but in the meantime: Here's a slide from my recent talk, which covers the DOs and DON'Ts of restoring ginkgoes within palaeoart! Enjoy! #Ginkgo #FossilFriday #paleobotany #paleoart #SciComm
A landscape page with a pale green background and two illustrations of Ginkgo on it. On the left is an inaccurate one with leaves coming directly from a branch. On the right is an accurate one with clusters extending from short shoots.

This fossil was shown to me and I really liked the delicate fan-like pattern. Not sure what it is though — maybe a marine plant, or possibly a bryozoan colony. The texture looks like a net or a leaf, and it made me stop and look twice. #Fossils #Paleontology #Paleobotany #Travel

I'm taking a look at the Rhynie Chert again, so I made a quick size chart of the plants I've already illustrated from it. These plants are some of the earliest land #plants, being from the Early #Devonian. From left to right: Asteroxylon, Horneophyton and Aglaophyton. #paleoart #paleobotany #sciart
Three primative plants on a size chart. On the left is a green thick stemmed plant with horizontal stems which curve upwards, with branded tuberous roots growing down. Behind it is the pale silhouette of a hand. Middle is a plant composed of dense intertwining clusters of narrow dichotomising stems. A callout bubble showing the roots is on the left of it. On the right is a green stemmed plant with outh curved arching horizontal stems and upright dichotomising stems which end in orange brown oval shaped sporangia.

Happy #FossilFriday! Here's a little goober I haven't shared here yet: a Tianyulong jumping of a broken branch of Yimaia capituliformis (a relative of ginkgo). This is based on an unpublished specimen which did the rounds online a few years ago. #paleoart #paleobotany #paleontology #dinosaur
a small brown dinosaur with a very fluffy round body and a long skinny tail with a tuft at the end jumping off a broken off ginkgo branch, splinters of wood fly through the air behind it.

A 300 million year old lycopsid tree from Brymbo Fossil Forest, on display in National Museum Cardiff (was National Museum of Wales). The trunk is about 30cm diameter. #FossilFriday #paleobotany 🧪⚒️🌍🌿

I almost missed the first #FossilFriday of 2025. Anyway, better late than never: here's my reconstruction of Wielandiella angustifolia, which I did last year!!! 2024 was a productive year of #paleoart, and that'll hopefully continue this year, so stay tuned!!! #paleobotany #paleontology #plants
A bennettitalean, wielandiella. A cluster of branches drawn diagrammatically are in the centre, dicotomising three times. At the end of each branch is a dense cluster of long green serrated leaves. Anatomical drawings of these leave are in the bottom right, amd a close up of a cone is in the top left: it looks like an onion. A picture eof the whole bush, which is rounded is in the top left, and a cross section the the stem is in the bottom left.
