I found this statue to be a bit disturbing and scary with its stiff posture and black robe. She is standing up very straight, her legs and knees locked in a straight line. Her arms reach out in front of her, also stiff and straight in posture. Her neck is very long and her face also has a stern look about it. She is wearing a long black robe and a gold crown. Her skin is gold, and her hair is stiff and black. Only her gown shows any sort of movement. A black wreath in her right hand (I didn't know what it was until I researched it) is also black and stiff. A small black owl stands on her left arm, its wings spread. Adorned with the symbols of power (crown), fame (wreath) and wisdom (owl). She stands on a very high pedestal, so pale blue sky serves as the background.

Shells, minerals, fossils, coloured stones, and glass are arranged across the walls, vaults, and pillars in dense ornamental patterns, while the black-and-white marble floor introduces a crisp geometric order beneath this fantastical abundance. The room does not merely imitate a grotto; it transforms the palace interior into a theatrical cabinet of wonders.

This opulence carries a distinctly political meaning. Frederick II commissioned the Neues Palais between 1763 and 1769, immediately after the Seven Years’ War, as a highly visible demonstration that Prussia had emerged powerful rather than exhausted. He called the palace a fanfaronade, a boast or grand display, and the Grotto Hall gives that boast an especially vivid form: the costly materials proclaim access to distant natural treasures, while their lavish arrangement displays the king’s command over resources, craftsmanship, and artistic imagination.

At the same time, the hall reflects the Enlightenment fascination with collecting and classifying the natural world. Yet here knowledge is subordinated to spectacle: minerals become ornament, shells become rocaille, and geological fragments are theatricalized as symbols of abundance. The result is a room in which Frederick’s political ambition is expressed not through military imagery, but through the extravagant mastery and aesthetic transformation of nature itself.

The stone figures positioned on top of the towers are known as the Watchmen of Alnwick Castle.
These statues were added in the early 14th century to represent soldiers defending the fortress.
While a few structural elements date to the 14th century, most of these dramatic stone figures were added between 1750 and 1786.
They were installed during a major Gothic-style remodeling commissioned by the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland and directed by architects James Paine and Robert Adam.
Carved by stonemason James Johnson, the statues wear fanciful 18th-century interpretations of medieval armour or classical clothing.
Alnwick Castle dates back to the late 11th century.
It has been the home of the Percy's - the Duke & Duchess of Northumberland for over 700 years.
