On Wednesday, I found a window of drier weather that would allow me to at least do a tiny bit of birding, but the rain came back unexpectedly. Defeated, I was leaving the reserve and almost missed this cold, wet Barred Owl. #originalcontent #birds #photography 📷 (more in alt-text)

Barred Owl poised on a low branch with back toward the camera and face turned over the shoulder to look at the photographer. When I first stopped the car, the owl was looking away from me, but I waited until I was rewarded with this quick glance. The round head of the owl looks a bit wet and unkempt and features large black eyes and a yellow beak. If you zoom in, you can see raindrops and beads of water on the feathers. The bird is called a barred owl because of the streaks on its front, but we can only see the back in this photo which features rich brown feathers with white tips. The background is dismal with gray skies and bare branches. The owl might not have felt miserable, but s/he looked it.

The crystal clear, turquoise water of Upper Joffre Lake sits below a small stream fed by the retreating Matier Glacier above it. Rocks can be seen below the water's surface. The rocky shore of the lake has evergreen trees growing in it, their reflections can be seen in the still water. There is blue sky, occasionally make itself visible through the moving mist.

Standing at the edge of a trail looking across at a kaleidoscope of colour under clear, blue skies. Great blue herons are tall, thin birds with long necks, legs, and bills, and a wide wingspan. They are mostly bluish-gray in color, with a white breast and black streaks, and a white top of the head. They have a thick, yellowish-orange bill that is sharp like a dagger.

Great blue herons can be found in freshwater and saltwater habitats, including marshes, sloughs, riverbanks, lakes, and open coasts. They also forage in grasslands and agricultural fields.
