Evacuation Orders Remain in Effect for Thousands Due to Okanagan Lake Wildfire
Thousands of residents in the Central Okanagan remain under evacuation orders due to the Quilpituk Creek Wildfire, which has burned 742 hectares and remains out of control. The evacuation orders affect 2,223 properties, while 425 properties are under evacuation alerts. The fire is burning north of Kelowna along Westside Road, which is closed north at Caesars Landing. Fire crews and structure protection teams have been working overnight to contain the blaze, extinguishing hotspots and establishing a 10-foot perimeter. BC Hydro reports approximately 1,500 customers are without power in the area. Evacuees can stay at the Royal LePage Place Arena in West Kelowna, which provides sleeping cots, washrooms, snacks, water, and first aid. The B.C. Wildfire Service notes the fire is growing up the slope away from communities, though it remains a significant threat. Residents are urged to stay informed and prepare to leave at a moment’s notice if conditions change.
