This piece was found inside a cave in the state of Guerrero by unsuspecting explorers. The highly standardized mask is typical of Teotihuacan style: hundreds like it have been found, although few are as well preserved. Some scholars have suggested these masks may have been used as faces on mortuary bundles.
Teotihuacan was a major, influential pre-Columbian city and civilization in the Mexican Plateau (ca. 100 BCE–650 CE), functioning as a massive, multi-ethnic metropolis with 125,000–200,000 residents at its peak. Renowned for monumental architecture, including the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, it served as a spiritual and economic hub known for its massive obsidian monopoly.
The name "Teotihuacan" is Nahuatl, meaning "the place where the gods were created," given by the Aztecs centuries after its abandonment. The original inhabitants' language and ethnicity remain unknown, though likely included Nahua, Otomi, or Totonac groups.
Teotihuacan exerted significant influence across Mesoamerica, with its art, architectural styles (such as talud-tablero), and religious symbols found in Maya and Zapotec regions.
The culture is characterized by impressive mural paintings, sophisticated ceramics, stone masks, and large-scale, orderly urban planning.
The city’s core was burned and largely abandoned around 550–650 CE. The ruins remained a powerful sacred site for later cultures, particularly the Aztecs, who traveled there for ritual ceremonies.

This funerary mask, crafted from jadeite, malachite, and obsidian, was created for the "Red Queen" of Palenque around 672 CE.
The mask was found in 1994 within Temple XIII at the Maya site of Palenque, Mexico.
The noblewoman's remains and surrounding items were coated in bright red cinnabar, which symbolizes blood and life in Maya funerary rituals.
It is widely believed to belong to Lady Ix Tz'akbu Ajaw, the wife of King K'inich Janaab Pakal.

Each is decorated with inlay constructed by different line lengths. Pot 1 has yellow inlay. Pots 2 and 4 a bright rust orange inlay, and pot 3 a yellow green inlay.

Pot 1 features a tree trunk that stretches into branches hanging from the left and right it has a flat top.

Pot 2 features a hill on the left and a tree reaching on the left on the right.

Pot 4 features an overhang with two houses perched on top.

Pot 5 features a mess of lines detailing a home among hills with an antennae reaching high.
