Ancient Coin of the Day: Today's thread is about Didius Julianus, the man who bought the position of Emperor from the Praetorian Guard on this day, 28 March, in AD 193. #ACOTD #Numismatics #Rome 🧵🏺 Image: RIC IV Didius Julianus 1; MoFA Boston (1999.514). Link - numismatics.org/ocre/id/r….

Canadians are feeling a bit territorial at the moment, so it feels appropriate to share this photo of a 2012 Lucky Loonie. It's the only circulating coin I've designed for 🇨🇦; it was inspired by a scientific paper describing the territorial behaviour of loons. #numismatics #sciart #coindesign
Photo of the reverse side of a 2012 Lucky Loonie coin, which includes the inscriptions "Canada" and "Dollar." It features a loon rising up from the water with its wings spread - a territorial display. It also includes the Olympic logo, a stylized maple leaf (like on the flag), and a security feature that's a circle a little above centre, with a maple leaf design inside it. Lastly, my initials ED are near the bottom left.

Ancient Coin of the Day: A really lovely denarius of 29-27 BC, commemorating the military power of Octavian (later Augustus), specifically for the Triple Triumph of 29 BC. #ACOTD #Numismatics 🏺🧵 Image: RIC Augustus 264; British Museum (1901,0407.459). Link - numismatics.org/ocre/id/r….

Ancient Coin of the Day: I’ve been remiss in coin threads this week, so let’s get back to it with this base-silver tetradrachm from Alexandria, ca. AD 66-67, one of a series celebrating the Emperor Nero. #ACOTD #Numismatics #Nero 🏺🧵 Image: RPC 5300/5. Link - rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins…

A gold #Roman aureus, with a portrait bust of the emperor Trajan on one side, & a phoenix on the other, standing on a laurel wreath with a radiate around its head. The coin was minted early in the reign of Trajan's successor Hadrian (📷 British Museum) #Numismatics #Archaeology AncientBlueSky
