Starting the year with a manuscript accepted as first author! 😎 In this study, we show that E. Coli infection during pregnancy can induce loss of neurons in the fetal brain that is not rescued by antibiotic treatment. More evidence of the impact pathogens can have on the 🧠! Coming out soon! #Neuro
Dear Dr Beckman,

My new paper is out and its free! Adult neurons resist influence more than neurons of younger animals, but once the system is altered, recovery in adults takes longer or never happens at all! This could be why adults resist emotions, drugs, and even learning when compared to children!

The internet is full of A.I & bad news now, so I'm doing my part to make it prettier with some NeuroArt ☺️. This is my favorite microscopy image from this project: 🟡 shows neural stem cells during embryonic brain development guiding neurons 🟣to their final location.🔵shows macrophages/microglia #Neuro

Hello. I am currently moving here, so I will be showing the pieces I made in the past. This is a Neuromuscular junction sculpted in Walnut and Cherry woods. #sciart #neuro #brain #neurons

Glad to see science bluesky is growing. Quick intro redo, I’m a #Neuro PhD candidate studying #astrocytes and plasticity in Nicola Allen’s lab at the Salk. #D-SPAN fellow planning to wrap up next summer. Interested in studying cell-cell interaction and plasticity in the context of disease.

New platform, new opportunity to show off my Pokémon-inspired cranial nerve cards 🧠🤓 Each card includes cryptic "strengths" & weaknesses" (perhaps better described as “stuff they help us do” & “stuff that might hurt / damage them in some manner”) as emojis... can you decode them? #neuro #anatomy
Image of the Pokémon-inspired olfactory nerve card with yellow borders and purple background.

Olfactory Cranial Nerve Card (HP 60; Type: Sensory)

Line drawing of olfactory tracts & bulbs highlighted in purple on the ventral surface of the brain

Special Sensory Nerve.
Exit from Skull: Foramina of the Cribriform Plate

Odour Sleuth: Inhale through nose & let the action (potentials) unfold!
Memory Boost: Unlock latent memories using associated olfactory cues (along with activation of the olfactory cortices, amygdala, & hippocampus)

Strength:
🌼 = smelling beautiful flowers
🍿 = smelling delicious food

Weakness:
💩 = smelling not so lovely smells
🥊 = head / face trauma → shearing of olfactory nerves passing through the foramina of the cribriform plate

"Bundles of bipolar neurons in the nasal mucosa stimulated by olfactory stimuli & synapsing in the olfactory bulb" a.k.a. nose cave stink sensor; CN I
Image of the Pokémon-inspired optic nerve card with yellow borders and light blue background.

Optic Cranial Nerve Card (HP 120; Type: Sensory)

Line drawing of optic nerves (cut), chiasm, and tracts highlighted in dark blue on the ventral surface of the brain

Special Sensory Nerve.
Exit from Skull: Optic Canal

Foresight: Sight in the forward direction... and a little to the side
Binocular Vision*: Double the input, double the fun; wider visual field, depth perception, and more! *Two optic cards must be played together

Strength:
🌈 = seeing all the lovely colours of the visible spectrum
🔍 = carrying information regarding spatial and temporal resolution

Weakness:
☀️ = bright light → burning retinas
🤒 = optic neuritis → sometimes linked to infections like Lyme disease
