Teeth blackening is a custom used to dye one's teeth black. It was primarily done to preserve the teeth into old age, as it prevents tooth decay similar to the mechanism of modern dental sealants. It was believed that only savages, wild animals, and demons had long white teeth. #Akha #Myanmar

The Wa people live in the northern part of Shan State and the eastern part of Kachin State in (Burma) Myanmar. Both men and women chew betel nut, which stains the teeth black.
