The "Queen of Gospel" Mahalia Jackson died #OTD in 1972. "To speak of her voice is to speak of magic and mystery and majesty. Hers is not a voice. It is a force of nature. It moves with the power of a tornado and soothes with the tenderness of a spring rain." #musichistory #music #gospel #legend
Black-and-white concert photograph of Mahalia Jackson (1911–1972), the legendary American gospel singer known as the "Queen of Gospel" and one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century. She is captured mid-performance on stage under dramatic spotlighting, her face and body (from the knees up) illuminated against a deep black background that creates a powerful sense of intimacy and spiritual intensity. Jackson stands with arms outstretched wide in joyful expression, mouth open in full-throated song. A microphone on a stand is in front of her. She wears a light-colored dress with a wide neckline, long sleeves, and dark beaded or braided trim running down the front, accented by a large floral corsage or lei at her left shoulder. Her posture radiates passion, power, and deep emotion, embodying the transcendent spirit of gospel music during one of her iconic live performances. #MahaliaJackson #QueenOfGospel #GospelMusic #WomenInMusic #BlackHistory

#OTD in 1987, Aretha Franklin--the Queen of Soul--became the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. #legend #musichistory
A dramatic black-and-white photograph capturing soul legend Aretha Franklin in mid-performance. She is passionately singing into a handheld microphone held close to her open mouth, eyes closed and head tilted slightly upward in emotional intensity. Her voluminous, styled bouffant hairstyle frames her face, and she wears a glamorous feathered boa that adds texture and elegance. Strong spotlighting illuminates her against a completely dark background, creating a powerful, iconic portrait of the Queen of Soul lost in the music.
