This mid-19th century Mexican flag was flown for Mexican Independence Day celebrations in Los Angeles. It's currently on display for the first time as part of the Autry Museum’s exhibit “Life, Liberty and Los Angeles.” #HispanicHeritageMonth #MexicanIndependenceDay

Recently looked through old Los Angeles City Council files (circa 1960s) about the #MexicanIndependenceDay celebrations that used to take place on the steps of City Hall organized by Comité Mexicano Civico - Patriotico. A couple of pages (1964) as seen at the LA City Archives:
A letter to Los Angeles City Council dated July 28, 1964 on the impressive Comite Mexicano Civico - Patriotico letterhead reads: Honorable Members of the City Council: This committee is once more preparing for the festivities and civic ceremonies to commemorate the 154th anniversary of the Independence of Mexico. We are hereby respectfully requesting your kind cooperation which you have so generously afforded us in the past, so that permission may be granted us for the use of the City Hall steps on the 15th of September next, for the traditional ceremony of "El Grito". The ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will end at 11:30 p.m. of that day. We would also appreciate the cooperation of the Los Angeles Police Department Band to play at the same place, between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. on the aforementioned date of September 15th. The committee would greatly appreciate permission for the closure of Spring Street and those others that may be deemed necessary in the same manner as has been done in previous years, so that the ceremony may proceed in normal and orderly manner. Thanking you in advance for your kind attention regard to our request, we remain, Respectfully yours, Comité Mexicano Cívico Patriótico Daniel Gonzalez Du Pree Dr. Reynaldo J. Carreon Jr.
A letter addressed to Panorama Latino TV, the Comite Mexicano Civico-Patriotico and the Board of Public Works (dated September 10, 1964) on Mayor Yorty’s letterhead reads: Greetings: At the meeting of the Council held September 10, 1964, the following Motion was adopted: "In connection with the celebration of the 154th anniversary of the independence of Mexico, I MOVE that the rules be suspended, and the Panorama Latino Inc., be granted permission to film the Mexican Independence Day Celebration (El Grito) on the Spring Street steps of the Los Angeles City Hall on September 15, 1964, and that the Board of Public Works be instructed to provide a camera equipment platform and necessary services. Respectfully yours, Walter C. Peterson, City Clerk
