1/x In the 1840s, a lame American naval officer, grounded at a desk in Washington, cut weeks off the world's ocean voyages without inventing a single machine. His raw material: a warehouse of logbooks nobody had ever read. Matthew Fontaine Maury, Pathfinder of the Seas. A 🧵 #maritimehistory

September memories from two years ago. A workshop on maritime history in a truly special setting: the Fenerbahce Gemisi/Ferry Ship Museum, beautifully renovated. And, this cute cat was also quite fascinated by our papers on maritime topics.😅 1/2 #MaritimeHistory #Ship #Vessel #Museum #Cats
A workshop on maritime history in a truly special setting: the Fenerbahce Gemisi/Ferry Ship that has been a museum ship at the open air complex of Rahmi M. Koc Museum in Hasköy in Istanbul since 2009. The Fenerbahce Ferry was built 1952 by a Denny Brothers, a Scottish shipbuilding company in Dumbarton and served as a passenger ferry at the Bosporus until 2008.

1/x On September 11, 2001 Coast Guard Lieutenant Michael Day, aboard the Sandy Hook pilot boat New York, keyed his radio: "All available boats. This is the United States Coast Guard. Anyone wanting to help with the evacuation of Lower Manhattan, report to Governors Island." #maritimehistory

German Räumboot Altair postwar. Details in ALT. From Facebook Navy General Board. The R-boats were small well-armed multi-role vessels, capable of sweeping for mines, escort duties, ASW work, general inshore work. They were in active service into the late 1960s. #maritimehistory #navalhistory
A German Räumboot fighting heavy seas. More commonly known as R boats, Räumboote were dedicated mine clearing vessels (Räumboot translated to clearing boat). 424 were produced over a series of designs, ranging from 60 tons to larger models of 160 tons. Despite their small size, they were rugged vessels able to handle themselves during heavy seas.

This ruggedness saw the ships expand beyond their intended role during the Second World War. Räumboote were found operating as escorts, anti-submarine ships, and rescue ships.

The ships fought hard in World War 2 and just over 140 Räumboote would survive the conflict. These vessels were spread out among the Allies and quickly put to work clearing minefields. Once this work was done, They continued serving in other roles until the 1970s.

The ship seen here is the Altair, one of the 24 ships returned to West Germany. She was built as R-76 during the early half of World War 2 and would serve until 1970 before being decommissioned.

1/x On a misty Sunday morning in 1942, in the empty middle of the South Atlantic, a cargo ship sailing empty met a German warship. The warship ordered her to stop. She attacked instead. Both ships died that morning. This is the SS Stephen Hopkins, and the duel of 27 September. #maritimehistory
