Fun fact: "Ye" in "Ye Olde Shoppe" isn't pronounced "yee"! It's actually "the." Early printers used "y" to replace the Old English letter "þ" (thorn) which made the "th" sound. So "þe" became "ye" but was still pronounced "the." Mind blown? 🤯 #LanguageHistory #EnglishFacts

There's nothing sweeter than a little Valentine's Day #etymology! Valentine's Day itself is named after Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who was thought to have performed marriages for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. All 8 words are on my Instagram. #wordnerd #valentinesday #languagehistory
Valentine's Day Etymology
Ring finger: In the 17th century, it was thought wearing a ring on this finger would cure illness, because it was connected to the heart. It was also called the leech finger because, well, this isn't romantic anymore, is it?
Billet-Doux: This word is used to refer to a short love letter and originates from French: billet meaning note and doux meaning sweet.
Chocolate: Originates from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word chocola-tl. The roots may be linked to xocalia, to make bitter, plus a-tl, water.
