The Dorset culture (also known as the Tuniit or Paleo-Eskimos) was a distinct, prehistoric group that inhabited the North American Arctic and Greenland from roughly 500 BCE to between 1000 and 1500 CE. They preceded the ancestors of modern Inuit (Thule people) and were known for a highly specialized, isolated culture that relied heavily on sea mammal hunting and produced intricate art.
Occupied regions from Greenland to the Canadian eastern Arctic (including Newfoundland) from 500 BCE to 1500 CE, with four distinct technological phases.
Dorset people were specialized sea-ice hunters focused on seals and walruses, rather than whale hunting.
Famous for specialized, refined, chipped stone tools (triangular end-blades) and soapstone oil lamps (qulliq), which were vital for heat and light.
Lived in small, nomadic groups in snow houses (igloos) or skin tents and used hand-pulled sleds for transport.
They were replaced by the eastward-expanding Thule people (ancestors of the Inuit) around 1000–1500 CE.

This cylindrical ivory box is intricately carved with high-relief figures. At the lower front, a prominent arched notch forms an original part of the vessel's architecture, deliberately designed to clear a dropping metal lock latch from the lid. Directly above this arch sits the youthful figure of Orpheus, clad in classical robes and cradling a large kithara. His music creates an atmosphere of absolute harmony, taming the wild animals carved closely around him, including a prominent, heavy-maned lion on his left and a second calm feline on his right. This intricate carving exemplifies how early craftsmen used pagan myth as a sophisticated double-meaning for Christ the Good Shepherd, bringing spiritual peace to the world.

A netsuke (pronounced "nets-keh") is a miniature Japanese sculpture. Because traditional Japanese kimonos had no pockets, men suspended personal items (like tobacco pouches or medicine cases) from their sashes (obi) using silk cords. A netsuke served as the functional toggle or counterweight at the top of the cord to keep it from slipping.
