UK state pension set to rise 3.9%, pushing payments above the income tax threshold
The UK state pension is expected to increase by 3.9% next year after official wage-growth data were released by the Office for National Statistics. The increase is based on the government's triple-lock system, under which the state pension rises by whichever is highest among average wage growth, inflation, or 2.5%. Average weekly earnings increased by 3.9% between May and July, making that figure the likely rate for the next pension increase. The final rate will depend on the inflation figure used in the calculation, but it is expected to be below 3.9%. If confirmed, the full new state pension would increase by about £479 a year, from £12,547.60 to approximately £13,036.60. That would put the annual payment above the current £12,570 personal income tax allowance by roughly £467, meaning part of the state pension could become taxable for many recipients. For pensioners with total retirement income below £50,270, the basic income-tax rate is 20%. Sky News calculates that a basic-rate taxpayer could pay around £91.40 in tax on the amount above the allowance. However, the practical increase in income is smaller because the first week of the pension year is paid at the old rate, while the remaining 51 weeks are paid at the new rate. After accounting for this and basic-rate tax, the article estimates an additional annual amount of about £388, or 3.1%, with take-home state pension income just below £12,936. The government has said it plans to exempt some pensioners who rely solely on the state pension from the administrative burden of paying small amounts of tax. The exemption would not generally apply to people with private pensions, those receiving the old basic state pension, or some people who deferred claiming their pension. According to analysis cited by Sky News, only about one in 16 pensioners would meet all the proposed criteria. Further details are expected to be announced at the government's Budget.
