An #IceAge masterpiece: This small carving (4.7cm) of a water #bird was made from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago. It's thought to be a #diver, #cormorant, or #duck. Found in the Hohle Fels cave on the Swabian Jura. It's the oldest known representation of a bird. 🧵1/2
A photo of a small bird figurine mounted on a thin metal rod, set against a blue gradient background. The figurine appears angled downward, with a pointed head and elongated body, creating a simple abstract silhouette.

Something ancient and wonderful for the weekend! A tiny horse figurine carved from mammoth ivory about 40,000 years ago! Imagine the #IceAge artist at work, sitting by the warmth of a fire, creating what is the world’s oldest known figure of a horse! 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a profile view of a small horse figurine with head to the left, displayed against a dark background. Sculpted from mammoth ivory, the surface is a mottled greyish-earthy-brown colour with a shiny patina. It was once likely pale white in colour. It measures 2.5 cm height, 4.8 cm width, and 0.7 cm depth. The head is gracefully lowered with a long and elegant curving neck, and a convex curved back. The four legs are incomplete. The top of the tail remains. The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are carved as indents.

The ‘Vogelherd Horse’ was excavated in 1931, together with a number of other ivory animal figurines from the Vogelherd Cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. It is the oldest known sculpture of a horse. On display at the Museum of Ancient Cultures, at Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany.

Something wonderful for the weekend! About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, an ancient artist skilfully sculpted this tiny head of a cave lion from mammoth ivory. It is one of the World’s oldest known works of figurative art. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows the left side profile of a head of a cave lion made of mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago (Aurignacian culture). The ivory would originally have been white in colour but is now a light creamy brown with a surface sheen, and darker patches caused by time spent buried in the ground. Carved details include mouth, nose, eyes, and ears. There is cross hatching behind the ears to indicate the mane. It measures 2.95 cm in length x 2.11 cm height.

A little cave lion carved from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago! 🦁 Imagine the #IceAge artist at work, sitting by the warmth of a fire, creating what is one of the world’s oldest known works of figurative art. Excavated 1930s, from the Vogelherd Cave, Germany. 📷 me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a small figurine carved from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago. It’s thought to represent a cave lion. It is a warm creamy beige colour with a glossy surface sheen The figurine is viewed from the side facing left. The body is long and low, with straightish back and only the top of the thigh of the hind and forelegs are present. The head is lowered. It is rather blocky-shaped with the snout sticking out slightly, forming a blunt nose. It has an incised mouth, and pointed ears. The body is covered with engraved markings including cross-hatched lines on its belly and a dot pattern over the back and thighs. A number of the Ice Age figurines from the caves of the Swabian Jura, have engraved surface markings. It’s suggested some might represent the animals fur/coat. Others are more enigmatic and less easily interpreted. We can only speculate as to what the marks meant to the maker. It measures just under 8.8 cm in length and 3.4 cm in height.

It was excavated in the 1930s, together with a number of other carved ivory animal figurines and some of the world’s earliest known musical instruments, from the Vogelherd Cave, in the Swabian Jura, Germany. The Swabian Jura is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The figurine dates to the Aurignacian period. On display at Museum Ancient Cultures, Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany.

Paleolithic art: A wild #horse head engraved on slate. The realistic rendering of the drawing is amazing! Wild horses were important hunting prey in the #IceAge. Was it about capturing memories of a successful hunt? Found in Saaleck, dating 19.000-12.000 BC. 🧵1/2 📷 me
