As December 21, 2012 approached, books, television specials, websites and Hollywood's disaster movie 2012 helped transform interpretations of the Maya Long Count calendar into a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Alexandra examined how the date became associated with apocalypse and investigated claims involving geomagnetic pole shifts, Earth-crust displacement, Planet X, astronomical alignments and other proposed catastrophes. Her book included interviews and perspectives from figures including Graham Hancock, John Major Jenkins and Daniel Pinchbeck while attempting to separate history and science from speculation and mythology. In this conversation, Rob and Alexandra examine the difference between what ancient Maya calendrical traditions actually represented and what modern popular culture turned them into.
