The Heavenly Twins by Sarah Grand | Victorian Romance, Marriage, Society & Women's Rights Audiobook Part 1
β Catholic Review β 3.5/5 Stars A historically significant novel that raises serious questions about marriage, fidelity, chastity, personal responsibility, education, and the treatment of women. Catholic readers may find some of the novel's concerns compatible with Catholic reflection on the dignity of marriage and the moral responsibilities spouses owe one another. However, Sarah Grand's treatment of sexuality, marriage, and women's emancipation reflects the Victorian feminist and social-reform movements of her era, rather than Catholic moral theology. The novel also contains mature themes and frank discussions of sexual morality. It is therefore best approached as a historical literary examination of Victorian society and changing attitudes toward marriage and gender, rather than as religious literature.
