NoName057(16) seem to be branching out more into little AI generated media posting, if you’ve ever discussed #hacktivism with me you’ll have probably heard me say “DDoS is pretty boring to look at”, screenshots of 404 webpage errors just aren’t inspiring. These videos are presumably to counter that.

From SPIN Magazine, November 1999. Did I post these images before? They are from an article entitled "The Politics of #Hacking", about #hacktivism, online activism and a big obsession of the late 90s "cyber-terrorism". I merged two images that were across two pages here, if it looks janky.
A photo of cult of the dead cow (cDc) hackers in I guess a hotel room (?) with various cDc posters, equipment, bags and briefcases. Pictured are Count Zero, deth vegetable, tweetyfish, Oxblood Ruffin, FreqOut and Grandmaster Ratte.

For those interested in the #history angle KnownSec attracted talent from some late 90s Chinese #hacker groups like the Green Army, 0x557 and XFocus. You can read more on my recent interest in #hacktivism in #China back in the day here: realhackhistory.org/2025/….

It took three months for photos, news and accounts of the violence committed against ethnic Chinese Indonesians to reach the Chinese internet of 1998. When the nascent hacker scene in China became …

The fiercely updated paperback and audiobook versions of Cult of the Dead Cow publish one week from today, six years after the originals. To help out the audio folks, here is the cast of characters that the print readers can flip back to. Clip and save! #hacking #hacktivism #cybersecurity

I'm fascinated by the early #history of #hacktivism in #China and somehow forgot about a 2003 National Geographic documentary that features l10n, one of the founders of #Hacker Union of China, and was involved in mass-exploitation of Linux servers via the l10n worm. (🧵)

Just as I always find myself having to remind people that blackhat #hackers have been around since the earliest days of computing it is also worth noting that #hacktivism has been a part of protests since AT LEAST 1984. I'm currently writing about this, from Oberlin College anti-apartheid protests.
Rotunda student newspaper, Longwood College
Farmville, Virginia, January 22, 1985 Number 15

"And in a somewhat more
radical tactic. 12 members of
Oberlin College's Student
Coalition Against Apartheid tried
unsuccessfully to shut down the
campus computer system and
hold it hostage until the school
sold off its $30 million in South
African-tied companies.
Accustomed to a regular,
organized series of student
protests during the warmer,
spring months, this winter's
spontaneous uprisings have
caught even anti-apartheid
activists by surprise."
