A monon chrome image showing Bawley Bay, Gravesend; on the south bank of the River Thames. The river is at low tide; a sailing barge, Cambria, is moored just beyond the mud and a little down river are the pontoons of the Royal Terrace Pier, the end of which is shown on the right of the image. The Pier is used by the Port of London Authority and a number of its fleet of boats are moored at the pontoons. On the horizon, in the middle of the image, is a tug. Taken using a Samsung NX100 and Samsung 20-50mm f/3.5-5.6 ED.

Gravesend Town Pier, on the south bank of the River Thames. Shot from the river bank on the pier's left side: roughly half of the pier length is shown with the left side of the pier head also in view. The pier is built of cast iron with a wooden walkway and head, off white, enclosed by glass. Until recently a restaurant occupied the pier with a covered public route to the pier head, where the town pontoon (out of view) served the now closed ferry service to Tilbury. The pier head has a low triangle roof with a small clock tower. The pier is the oldest remaining cast iron pier in the world and was built in 1834. It's open to walk out to the pier head during the day. Shot in mist, so the river beyond the pier is not visible...

A small, rusty workboat named Marion S moored off Gordon Promenade at Gravesend, on the River Thames, taken 13 years ago to the day. Landscape format: a yellow mooring buoy and rope to the left, on the right Marion S, a workboat, with a dark blue hull and white superstructure. The boat is rusty, all over. It looks disused. Its reflection shows in the water between it and the shore: 3 seagulls and a swan and a smaller mooring buoy are lined up along the bottom of the frame. The photo was taken with a Fuji 'superzoom', Fujifilm FinePix HS10, a very serviceable little thing that I still have most of (it came apart). I don't know what happened to Marion S, sadly !

#Gravesend used to have its own Airport, operated from 1932 to 1956.. During the WWII years it operated as a militarily airfield. It’s now a housing estate, with very little left of the airport, except this plaque, dedicated to the airman who served there. #History #UKHistory #WWIIHistory #UK
