This #ivory panel now in #Milan was once the front of an #Evangeliary or book of the #Gospels. Made probably in 550-560, it shows scenes from the life of #Christ and is a triumphant assertion of #orthodoxy over #heresy, made probably for the glowing bishop #Neon of #Ravenna.

DIPTYCH OF THE FIVE PARTS, C. 450-500 CE. MUSEO DEL DUOMO, MILAN

This ivory panel is one of two which together made up the front and back covers of a book of the Gospels. The two are called the Diptych of the Five Parts because each of them is formed of five rectangular ivory panels carved in low relief. It comes from the workshops of Ravenna and probably dates from the time of bishop Neon (450-473). Ravenna had supplanted Milan as capital of the empire in 402 and naturally became a centre of the arts. This panel, the front cover, was made with a lavish central part showing a curtained arch and in front of it, set onto the ivory, a cross of emeralds and rubies.The top ivory part has a wreath at both ends containing the lion of St Mark and the eagle of St John. Between them is a scene of the three Magi bringing gifts to the baby Jesus, who is sitting on Mary's lap, and Mary is sitting on a throne, a reference to the Council of Ephesus in 431 which declared Mary as Theotokos, the mother of God.
