Post scrip, for Tolkien fanatics: yes, he said something very kind and humanizing about Jewish people that one time, and I applaud him for it, but that doesn't change what's IN THE ACTUAL BOOKS, so don't bother me with that.

Middle-earth is a highly racialized set of texts, whether that makes any logical sense or not, so when we cast visibly non-white actors (for anyone other than the Haradrim), we are indeed breaking from Tolkien. Which is *good*. We should do that. Because Tolkien's text was racist.

Therefore, Bouie makes a great point that without the historical context that created "race," it makes no logical sense for there to be any such thing as whiteness in Middle-earth, but that logic nevertheless haunts the text, the author, the audience, and its future adapters, such as Sirkus.

This leads to Fact #2, Middle-earth is set in a pre-racialized world, but it was *written* in the 1930s/40s by a man living in the waning years of the British empire and raised in South Africa to the age of 5. He was, like us, enmeshed in a world where the logic of race and whiteness permeated.

He argues that because Middle-earth is located in a fantasy version of ancient Britain, a world that didn't contain the historical events that resulted in Europe inventing the concept of whiteness that means there's "no white people in Middle-earth." He's missed two key facts, though.

So obviously I agree with Bouie, here, that casting only white actors in a Tolkien/Middle-earth story is a choice, and I'll say it: a racist choice. But when he says there's no "race" in Middle-earth, in the modern sense, I'm so sorry, but he's wrong […]
