Kalshi Permanently Bans George Santos and Fines Him $71,356 Over Market Manipulation

Kalshi has permanently banned former U.S. Representative George Santos from its prediction market and fined him $71,356 for violating the platform’s rules concerning insider trading and market manipulation. According to a disciplinary notice published by Kalshi, Santos traded contracts related to whether he would attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address in February 2026 and then made public statements that allegedly attempted to influence the prices of those contracts. Some of his statements were described by Kalshi as false or misleading. The day before the address, Santos posted on X that he would attend the event from the House gallery. During the speech, however, he said he was actually at an airport watching it on television. Kalshi’s enforcement team flagged his trading activity, froze his account, and referred the matter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which oversees prediction markets. Santos later settled with the CFTC for $35,000 without admitting the agency’s allegations. More than $17,500 of that amount represented the profit from the trades, while the remainder was a penalty. Santos declined to comment to WIRED through his legal representative but mocked Kalshi’s decision on social media, referring to it as a ban from a “gambling platform” and questioning how long the company would remain in operation amid regulatory disputes. The former congressman has previously faced significant legal and ethical consequences. He was expelled from Congress in 2023 after an ethics investigation and later pleaded guilty to federal charges involving campaign-related financial crimes. President Trump commuted his prison sentence, and Santos was released in 2025. Kalshi also announced enforcement actions against several political candidates for trading contracts connected to their own races. The company says Santos was the only person in the latest group who had not settled with Kalshi. The platform warned that it may pursue legal action if he does not pay the fine.
