YAY now that the contest is live I can share my fish I designed for Basil's fish contest :D Gar are my second fav fish (after bichir) and designing creatures to fit into worldbuilding is my FAVORITE THING TO DO. Meet the Pinecone Gar (Atractosteus pinus) 🎣 [ #Art #Gar ]
Illustration of a brown gar fish with pinecone-like scales. There is also a baby that is a brighter green with more spike-like pinecone scales. The text next to it reads:

"Atractosteus pinus is a large bodied gar species that is endemic to the freshwaters of Stinky Hollow. As adults they are typically seen in a range of browns and yellow-green hues while their offspring as a bright green, much like newly formed pinecones.

An interesting adaption is that the scales of a young Pinecone Gar spike out as a defense mechanism and become more compact and smoother as they age. Young are typically found within the leaf litter and muck at the bottom of bodies of water, waiting to ambush small fish, bugs and other critters."

Additional sketch on the bottom shows a baby pinecone gar hiding amongst leaf litter and driftwood.

Happy New Year! At the beginning of 2025, may we present the #Holstein #Gar! This is a mosaic #CRISPR knock out spotted gar mutant for the slc45a2 gene, also known as aim1, matp, or OCA4 in humans. Generated with generous support from #NSF EDGE. #EndlessFishMostBeautiful
