Visitors enter Nanzo-in Temple through a nice forested area with a river. Smaller Buddha statues decorate the bottom of the stairs that lead up to one of the main buildings on the premises.

The Statue of the Reclining Buddha was built in 1995. It has a total length of 41 meters, height of 11 meters, and a weight of 300 tons (which are fairly similar dimensions as the copper figure of the Statue of Liberty in New York City). It is the world’s largest bronze statue of the Buddha reclining as he enters Nirvana.

The reclining Buddha statue is surrounded by many smaller statues, Jizō figures and prayer rolls.

Another striking statue on the premises is that of the Dai-Fudomyoo, the immovable protector and god of fire. With a fearsome look, alert stance, and a sword in hand, the powerful fire deity looks every part the destroyer of evil. One eye looks upward while the other looks downward, and the mouth is closed, but with one tooth pointing upward and one pointing downward, a depiction that symbolized an all-seeing power.
