The brushwork is loose and expressive, which emphasizes emotion over precision.

Delacroix uses the familiar conventions of Renaissance portraiture to lend a solemn dignity to the model. The solid pyramid formed by her body, set at a slight angle to the viewer, and the low horizon of the landscape behind her remind us of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

Although we do not know the name of the sitter for this portrait, she was likely one of the non-European models that Delacroix employed during the 1820s while working on his monumental paintings of subjects drawn from Near Eastern history and Orientalist literature.

"The Sorceress" was French artist Georges Merle’s submission to the Paris Salon exhibition of 1883. The beautiful commanding female figure in the act of performing a spell is likely a subject from literature, although the source has yet to be identified. To many European artists, the Middle East and Asia proved both captivating and mysterious. Orientalist art allowed Europeans to project their desires and fears onto real or imagined cultures entirely different from their own while leaving themselves ostensibly unchanged. They found the rich colors, lush textiles, and distinctive architecture of the East particularly attractive.

Merle depicts an "exotic" dark-haired woman. Her clothing, surroundings, and implements – a voodoo doll, upside-down crucifix, and pentagram with Arabic inscriptions – all indicate that she is in the midst of a magical spell. She is seated on the floor in an ornate, silvery-white gown adorned with gold patterns. She wears a vibrant red head covering and numerous gold and jeweled bracelets and rings, enhancing her regal and exotic appearance. Her piercing gaze is serious and intense, hinting at focus and power.

She holds a tall, ornate staff, resembling a ceremonial wand. Behind her, partially obscured, is a dark background depicting a pentagram and other arcane symbols, adding to an occult theme. To her right, on a small, richly patterned table, rests a human skull in a shallow dish. Before her on the floor lies a small, fallen doll dressed in red, stabbed in the heart with a gold pin.

A long, dark candle burns brightly, casting a warm glow that contrasts with the overall somber mood of the room. The atmosphere is one of mystery, foreboding, and concentrated magical power. The color palette is predominantly dark, with the woman's dress and the candle offering highlights against the deeper shadows. Merle's meticulous attention to the clothing, jewelry, and ritual objects, contributes to the sense of opulent and detailed ritual preparation.

"Woman in her Dressing Room" by French artist André Lhote, who willingly worked in gouache, was created during World War II. Seated beside a table on which are a pitcher and basin, an unidentified woman, wearing a lowcut white slip or dress and teal healed shoes, reaches down to her ankle as she leans forward with her bare legs crossed.

“The secret of art lies not in the degree to which a painted figure resembles the living object, but in that from which it differs,” wrote the artist, who conceived his work as a juxtaposition of forms combining straight lines and ellipses.

Lhote extolled art that was constructed and premeditated as opposed to fleeting inspiration. His composition is structured and held together by a system of harmonious chromatics. Lhote displays his skill as a colorist by reducing his chromatic range and playing on the intensity of values to modulate light without ever seeking volume, which, like three-dimensionality, movement, and perspective, was likely banished from his vocabulary.

Lhote limited his palette here to a few fundamentals which he broke down into flatly juxtaposed neighboring hues. Fleshtones are drawn with pink tinted with ochre or veering to violet. Blue-grey supports shadows, the bench and wall in the background. Orangish-ochres complete this range of pastels heightened by bright colors like the red of the vest or blue in a shadow in the hair.

“Innocent tonal freshness and the virginal fling of a line are the prerogatives of the old artist who can allow himself to take this liberty,” wrote Lhote in Traité de la figure in 1950. Even with the most sensual subjects, such as getting dressed or undressed, the painter did not seek to enter his sitter’s psychological state. Without deviating from a sensitive silent gracefulness, this painting is a demonstration of how purity of line and equilibrium between structure and color result in formal masterpieces.

The gesture of pulling back the curtain seems loaded: is she peering outward in anticipation, reflecting inward, or simply caught mid-movement?

At the time “Young Woman by a Window” was painted, Toulmouche (1829–1890) was an established figure in Parisian artistic circles, known for his refined depictions of fashionable women in carefully arranged interiors. Born in Nantes and trained in Paris, he achieved success, admired for his technical precision and elegant treatment of fabrics, décor, and gesture. His marriage to the cousin of Claude Monet linked him to the Impressionist circle, though Toulmouche himself remained loyal to the Academic style, catering to the tastes of wealthy collectors and a bourgeois audience that valued refinement and domestic ideals. He was often commissioned by patrons who appreciated his ability to blend genre painting with high-fashion portraiture, earning him a reputation as a painter of “elegant genre” works.

French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s brushwork is as much the subject of this painting as the unidentified young woman. A flurry of rapid marks captures her blushing face. Bold, fluid strokes of unblended color define her golden yellow dress, red & white ribbons, and lavender/pink cushion. Fragonard created the white lace of her ruff (the frill around her neck) and the bodice of her dress by dragging his brush handle through the paint while it was still wet.

Among the most beloved works in the artist’s oeuvre, "Young Girl Reading" (La Liseuse or Jeune Fille lisant) is part of the “fantasy portrait” (figures de fantaisie or portraits de fantaisie) series, in which Fragonard’s friends and patrons are dressed in elaborate costumes. He supposedly painted each portrait in an hour. Like the others in the series, the girl in this painting originally faced the viewer, but Fragonard later repainted her absorbed in reading.

Fragonard's late Rococo manner was distinguished by remarkable facility, exuberance, and hedonism. One of the most prolific artists active in the last decades of the Ancien Régime, Fragonard produced more than 550 paintings (not counting drawings and etchings), of which only five are dated. Among his most popular works are genre paintings conveying an atmosphere of intimacy and veiled eroticism.

In "Young Girl Reading," color helps convey emotion and mood. Fragonard used a typical Rococo color scheme, which consisted of soft, delicate colors and hues of gold. The pillow's violet tint, the darker-toned walls and armrest, and the woman's rosy-toned skin and bright-yellow dress help create the illusion of warmth and joy, and a sense of sensuality. These bright colors present a strong contrast to the dark background and help focus our gaze on the young aristocrat.

French artist Madeleine Lemaire titled the work “Les Fées” (or The Fairies) placing these figures somewhere between Belle Époque society portrait and dreamlike allegory. Painted around 1908, late in her career and shortly after she was awarded the Legion of Honor, the canvas shows how she carried her success as the “empress of roses” into more overtly fantastical scenes, trading garden backdrops for the charged atmosphere of an encounter between women.

On this large, vertical oil painting, two light-skinned young women stand pressed together in the foreground, set against a dark, softly blurred backdrop. The 60 x 42 in. canvas is almost human scale, so their bodies feel “close” to us. A blonde figure turns three-quarters toward us, shoulders bare above a low, off-the-shoulder gown made of pale, shimmering fabric gathered closely around her bodice. Her hands a crossed loosely in front of her, as if she is pausing between gestures. Just behind her, a brunette companion leans in, draping her arms along the blonde’s shoulders and looking outward with a small, knowing smile. Both women wear delicate ornaments in their hair and gauzy wraps that fall in long, translucent folds down their backs, suggesting fairy wings without depicting them literally. The space around them dissolves into loose strokes and soft glows rather than a detailed room or landscape, so our attention stays on the closeness of their bodies plus the tilt of heads, the touch of hands, and the shared, intimate pose.

Lemaire often painted a brunette clinging to a blonde, and here that pattern invites queer and feminist interpretations as the scene can be read as tender friendship, tipsy confidantes at the end of a ball, or a quietly romantic embrace that slips past polite norms by hiding in the guise of fairies. The painting helps expand Lemaire’s legacy beyond floral still lifes to include images that resist simple, cisheteronormative stories about desire, companionship, and women’s presence.

In 1929, the young Maharaja and Maharani of Indore (the “king” and “queen” of a princely state in British India) asked French artist Bernard Boutet de Monvel to create their portraits. He depicted the “modern female” socialite standing elegantly in front of a dark, ornate cabinet. The atmosphere is one of poise, sophistication, and a sense of calm refinement.

The lighting is well-controlled, highlighting the Maharani's features and the folds of her exquisite light beige satin or silk gown, with a pink shawl draped at her side. Her timeless dress features a fitted bodice and a full, flowing skirt, with subtle pleats and gathers. Her short, wavy 1920s bob hairstyle is sophisticated and well-groomed.

She wears diamond earrings and a stunning diamond & emerald necklace featuring the 47-carat "Indore Pears" diamonds in a setting by French jewelry company Mauboussin. The two teardrop-shaped stunners, at 46.62 and 44.18 carats respectively, were later purchased and sold by American jeweler Harry Winston in 1946.

Yaswant Rao Holkar II married Sanyogitabai Holkar of Indore in 1924. Both were products of private British education. She was merely 11 years old at the time, he 16. In 1926, he became Maharaja and was invested with full powers in 1930, succeeding his father Tukojirao Holkar II.

The couple craved cosmopolitan adventure. They traveled so extensively in Europe and America that they were criticized in India for rarely being on home soil. They benefited from aristocratic privileges to lavishly entertain and thrive amongst film stars, fashion designers, and famous artists as part of Europe and America’s young super elite.

Tragically, the beautiful Maharani passed away at just 22. Information surrounding her death is vague, but allegedly she was in Switzerland (where, incidentally she was also born) for a “cure,” but things unexpectedly turned for the worse. She left behind her 4-year-old daughter Usha and her husband who married twice again in his lifetime.
