Samuel Pepys had significant professional and social connections to transatlantic slavery in the years covered by his diary and afterwards, mediated by his involvement with two English slave-trading companies – the Royal African Company and the Company of Royal Adventurers trading to Africa. He also owned and sold at least two enslaved people in London in the 1670s and 1680s. This article uses previously neglected manuscript evidence to reassess Pepys’s involvement in enslavement and his status as an enslaver. It emphasizes three themes: the relationship between Pepys’s official connections to the African companies and his private ownership of enslaved people; the development of his involvement in slavery within his extensive social and professional networks; and Pepys’s own agency in curating his official and personal archives to shape and limit our knowledge of his slave ownership. In doing so, it considers how the consciously expressed professional and ethical priorities of administrators and slave-owners like Pepys shaped the complex archival traces of slavery in England and erased the experiences and voices of enslaved people.

This historiographical review maps and scrutinizes the interpretative traditions that have grown around Edmund Burke’s thought since the 1790s, identifying three distinctive strands of criticism: the Victorian utilitarian/proto-liberal interpretation, the Namierite analysis of Burke, and the North American natural law tradition. It then turns to the recent archival and contextual scholarship that has largely superseded these schemata – the biographies of F. P. Lock and Richard Bourke, the analysis of J. G. A. Pocock, and the imperial and global perspectives of P. J. Marshall and others – which relocates Burke within the political crises and colonial contexts in which he wrote. This reorientation has been underpinned by the modern editorial projects behind his Correspondence and Writings and speeches. Rather than adjudicating who Burke was, the review traces how successive generations have read, reframed, and instrumentalized his prima facie contradictions, suggesting that his resistance to classification reflects less a defect in the literature than the enduring richness of its subject.

When Thomas Ellwood repeatedly flouted his father’s command in 1659 to stay away from the Quakers, his behaviour provoked bitter family quarrels and a beating, until his father eventually found a surprising solution: he confiscated all his son’s hats. Thomas became in effect a prisoner in the house, accepting that it would be unthinkable to go outside without a hat. However strange to us today, this made perfect sense to contemporaries, and such episodes remind us that the multifaceted conventions surrounding dress played an important role in early modern culture. When, where, and how hats were worn, and the gestures in which they featured, conveyed signals about identity and status, could sustain, display, or defy social hierarchies and relationships, and asserted political or religious loyalties.

Scholars have described the days leading up to birth in the early modern period as a time when women purchased linens, prepared bedchambers, and called upon the services of a midwife and their gossips. However, manuscript recipe collections reveal that preparations in anticipation of labour went beyond such measures and incorporated the consumption of specific medicines. This article studies remedies that were designed to be taken six weeks before birth to reveal, in new ways, the experiences of late pregnancy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These remedies, we argue, show women’s anticipation of birthing beyond fears of their own or their infant’s mortality. We suggest that they emphasize the centrality of women’s ‘felt maternity’, which we define as an embodied sense of responsibility for the infant and its passage into the world, and that they demonstrate that anticipation involved multi-layered experiences of time. Moreover, we suggest that these remedies make manifest the physical areas of concern for women in late pregnancy, revealing a perceived need for the body to be fortified and dried, as well as the desire to relieve uncomfortable corporeal symptoms associated with this point in the lifecycle.

In the context of increasing historiographical attention to the emotional content of French revolutionary politics, the essentially unprecedented nationwide consultation that produced the cahiers de doléances of 1789, now available as a searchable digitised corpus, offers a route into exploring the hopes, fears, and concerns of thousands of French people who participated directly in the cahiers’ composition. Mapping their uses of the concept of ‘trust’, and its manifold implications, offers new evidence on the nature and contours of the political relationships they believed they inhabited, and on the extent to which they were enacting agency over the prospect of change. It also provides material to contemplate the implications of the highly centralized, top-down reform processes actually initiated from the summer of 1789 onwards, and the violent complexity of their reception.
