Doctor Trains More Than 25,000 People in CPR Across Telangana and Beyond
Dr. Sivaranjani is working to improve bystander response to cardiac emergencies by providing free CPR, first aid, and choking training to communities in Telangana and other parts of India. Her initiative has trained more than 25,000 people, including teachers, parents, students, police officers, ASHA workers, corporate employees, and hospital staff. The effort is based on the importance of providing immediate assistance when someone experiences cardiac arrest. The article notes that the chances of survival can decline rapidly when CPR is delayed, while prompt CPR can significantly improve the likelihood of survival. However, bystander CPR remains uncommon in India, with reported rates ranging from 1.3% to 9.8%. Dr. Sivaranjani's training has also been followed by real-life examples of participants using their skills during emergencies. One trainee, Ankita Rao, performed CPR on her husband after he suffered cardiac arrest about a month after attending a workshop. In another case, a trainee began CPR after finding her toddler unresponsive and not breathing, continuing until the child began breathing again. The initiative is also designed to expand CPR education beyond the people directly trained by Dr. Sivaranjani. Parents have donated CPR mannequins, with nearly 40 reportedly contributed. Twenty-two mannequins have been placed in medical colleges across Telangana to support further training. Through the Goodwill Foundation, the program is also expanding to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, and Punjab. The broader goal is to create a chain of CPR education in which trained participants teach others, increasing the number of people capable of responding during a cardiac emergency.
