Vivid bands of the aurora borealis sweep across the night sky above Mussenden Temple on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast. Curtains of glowing magenta, pink, violet, and green stretch from horizon to zenith, blending into one another in soft, luminous ribbons. A few wisps of dark cloud drift through the display while scattered stars remain visible between the colours. Along the bottom of the frame, the headland forms a dark silhouette, with the iconic rotunda of Mussenden Temple standing alone against the glowing sky, emphasizing the scale and drama of the rare celestial spectacle.

I took this photo yesterday.
Turner’s painting is titled “Petworth House from the Lake: Dewy Morning” c1809.
Turner’s painting is more to the left, has boats on the water and the church has a spire rather than the present tower. I wanted to get the swans in my photo so it is more to the right 🦢. I also wanted to get the full house in whereas the left side of the house is obscured by the hill in the Turner painting.
The sky was really atmospheric yesterday and there were lots of waterbirds on the lake.
Turner spent a lot of time at Petworth and was given his own art studio there.
He painted many views of the grounds and deer park. A number of his paintings of Petworth House and grounds, and many others of his masterpieces and other artists’ works, are displayed in the house. It is the largest collection of Turner paintings outside London.
The 700 acre park was landscaped by the famous landscaper Capability Brown between 1753 and 1765. In addition there is a 30 acre pleasure garden with flowers and woodland.
(Obviously when I realised it was Palaces and Gardens day I had to fit in a post but back to emptying kitchen cupboards as the kitchen is being refurbished. What fun!)

Hever Castle in Kent is famous for being the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s 2nd wife and the mother of Elizabeth I. My photo shows the castle with part of the moat. #PalacesandGardens #FamousFor #Castles #Kent #Photography

Built in 1270 and transformed into a Tudor manor by the Boleyn family.
Henry visited Anne Boleyn here frequently. After marrying and later executing her the castle became the property of the Crown. Later Henry gave it to his 4th wife, Anne of Cleves as part of a settlement for the annulment of their marriage.
Eventually the castle fell into decay and was bought by William Waldorf Astor who renovated and added to it.
It was later sold in 1983 and the present owners opened it to the public.

Photograph shows a quatrefoil spy hole known as 'The Squint' from the first floor Drawing Room down into the Great Hall below at the Tudor beauty of Rufford Old Hall in Lancashire. Monochrome filter used to enhance the architectural features.

Through this spy hole there's an amazing view of the wooden hammer-beam roof, ceiling bosses and the angel carvings on each timber. You can also see armour helmets and swords hanging on the wall on the left and pikes on the wall straight ahead. At the bottom of The Squint, you can see the intricately carved top section of a huge moveable screen...it looked too old, large and priceless to actually test out those qualities. The screen may be the main thing the guides point out but most people, if they're being honest, will remember The Squint first.

The hall was built between 1530 and 1550. It's run by the National Trust, the gardens are also lovely, as are the canalside walks and Mere Sands Wood nearby. Had a day out in that area last week.

Photograph taken looking at the 13th century Caerlaverock Castle near Dumfries in Scotland. There are lots of things to see there but its overall shape is what it is famous for. It is a moated triangular castle (the only one in Britain) and was built as a fortress and residence. Apparently its design meant a lower number of defenders were required to protect all directions of approach.

If you're interested in history and battles, it's worth reading more about this amazing castle - there were a lot of battles during Wars of Scottish Independence here and the castle changed hands several times.

My photo taken yesterday shows the side of the house with curved windows and two large urns on plinths. The path curves round the house and leads to gates which in turn lead to the deer park and lake.
The ground is really dry as we are in a drought. The sky has beautiful clouds.

Our picture shows a stunning mural painted on a local house by artist Shauna Anseo of the fabled water goddess Berba.

She is the protector of our local river and l will go into the folklore after the picture description.

Working from the bottom of the picture up, the mural starts with the beautiful aquamarine blues and greens of the river itself and on the right hand side bottom portion of the mural we have a playful chestnut coloured brown otter splashing in the waters.

Next, we then have the river goddess Berba herself seen facing away from us in a wonderful flowing golden green dress, her lightest of red hair tied in three platted pony tails streaming down her back.

She is summoning spirals of opaque water that flows around her with her arms in twirling motions. In the background of the mural we have the bridge that crosses the river here flanked by a castle on the right hand side and buildings on the left-hand side all in a light sandstone colours.

The sky above is a wonderful mythical mixture of reds, oranges,yellows, blues and velvet purples to complete this vibrant installation.

In the picture we also see a white coloured building next to our mural house and the slightest of glimpses of the village square to the right. Above the entire scene, there is a light blue sky with wispy cobweb like clouds and everything is bathed in golden sunlight.

Our photograph is finished with a thin white border frame and now some folklore:

Berba is an ancient Irish river goddess associated with the River Barrow, a major waterway in Ireland. She is often seen as a mother figure, the progenitor of the Leinster people, and a guardian of water and life. Her myth involves figures like Dian Cecht, who burned the ashes of a slain serpent into the river, causing it to boil, which is how the river got its name, "Berba" or "boiling".
