King Penguin Contortionist! photo shows a King Penguin standing on sand, balancing on one leg and its stiff short tail trying to scratch the back of its neck with its right foot. Both are facing forward and the adult bird has its mouth wide open showing the red inside the gape, in an aggressive manner - the reason for this was that just out of frame was a Striated Caracara, a known predator of penguin chicks, getting too close for comfort.

The birds have sooty-black heads necks and underparts, and dark brown backs and wings. Their long bill is bright red but their most striking fearture is their eyes which are yellow with a red and yellow eye ring and a black spot on the iris at 5 o'clock which looks like an iris defect from a distance the eyes give the birds a rather alarming appearance. In the photo the birds on the right and centre have their beaks open calling and the centre bird is bent over as they display to one and other.

The penguin was lying on the ground and the photo is taken head on resulting in the head looking almost perfectly round and near symmetrical. The face is black other than the orange ear patches and orange side to the gape, plus a tiny blush of yellow on the forehead.
The round head is framed by the silver shoulders and back and orange and cream chest at the bottom

I may have messed with the contrast here 😂 but the #horizontal head tilt & the eyes are all Wol's. The sunset's glow was so bright it caused natural Red Eye. The contrast has been increased exaggerating the difference between the dark and paler feathers but the orange glow to the whole picture is not enhanced - it was due to the very bright low sunset shining directly onto the bird. This also had the effect of causing "red -eye" where the usually black pupil shines red as direct light rays are reflected off the back of the retina. The short- eared Owl is naturally characterised by its bright yellow irises. The bird has tilted its head to one side, nearly to the horizontal showing off the Owls Famously flexible neck.
