Report finds nearly half of young people in England trust AI more than humans for fact-checking
A new report based on a Public First survey of more than 4,000 people aged 11 to 24 in England reveals that nearly half of young people now trust artificial intelligence over a human being when it comes to checking facts. The findings show that young men are even more inclined to rely on AI tools rather than people for verification. The survey was included in a report authored by historian Sir Anthony Seldon and tech entrepreneur Tim Bunting, which warns that the education system risks losing its perceived legitimacy if it continues to undervalue AI. According to the report, England's education system is still teaching as though it operates in an 'AI-less world that no longer exists', despite nearly 87% of young people having already used an AI tool. The authors argue that education has failed to keep pace with how extensively young people are already engaging with AI, creating a dangerous gap in trust. Less than 10% of respondents believe schools and universities are adequately preparing them for a world shaped by AI. The report calls on the government to adopt a 10-point plan for AI in education, including the creation of a rapid response unit within the Department for Education and the establishment of 100 'AI champion schools and colleges'. Sir Anthony described education as the UK's 'Cinderella sector' for technology and urged immediate action. In response, the government has announced plans to introduce AI tutoring tools in schools by the end of 2027 and has set up an AI Safety and Pedagogy Taskforce to ensure safe and effective use of the technology in classrooms.
