The church is an impressive example of Byzantine architecture.
It was originally dedicated to Panagia Hodegetria (the Virgin who shows the way).
During Ottoman rule, the church was converted into a mosque, but after Greek independence it was returned to Christian worship.
The church is one of the most important monuments in the region and offers a sweeping view of the Aegean Sea.

The House of the Seven Works of Mercy.
The first floor is pierced by three cross-windows above and below which are six bas-reliefs representing six of the corporal works of mercy, namely from top to bottom and from left to right :
bury the dead;
visit prisoners;
assist the sick;
feed the hungry;
give drink to those who are thirsty;
clothe the naked.
The seventh work of mercy (welcoming pilgrims) is symbolized by the house itself, which was originally an inn.

The facade is crowned by a richly decorated gable with numerous terracotta decorations:
scrolls with acanthus leaves and lion's head; “Anno” “1669” cartouches with acanthus leaves and small mascarons; ram's head;
flute player, mascaron, cherub and fruit garlands; volutes topped with putti. Statues representing Faith, Hope and Love.

In the 19th century, the Hussey family built a new house nearby, leaving the old castle as a romantic ruin at the heart of one of England’s most picturesque estate gardens.
