“William Bell Scott (1811-1890)
Una and the Lion, 1859-60
Oil on canvas
Pre-Raphaelite artists were fascinated by the complex imagery of the early English poet Edmund Spenser (1552/3-1599). His best-known work The Faerie Queene is an epic chivalric allegory (story with a hidden meaning) dedicated to Elizabeth I. The heroine Una is surprised by a lion which is tamed by her innocence and beauty and becomes her protector. The figure of Una was partially based on a young painter, Alice Boyd of Penkill Castle in south Ayrshire. Scott had recently met her at Newcastle School of Design.
Purchased 1978 (NG 2367)”

“Label by primary school pupil:
Nia, West Lothian
Is that Lucy and Aslan? No, it's Una. Who is Una? For the millionth time, Una is a princess. A poem about a girl called Una whose parents are a king and queen. On her way to save her mum and dad she meets a lion who becomes friends with Una.”

Finally trying to workout my attendance strategy for #HSS2026 #ESHS2026 (do we have a single hashtag?) and OMG it is overwhelming! 2000 ppl?! 100s of parallel papers? Can't even do my usual random selection as it would mean too much scuttling between buildings (I'm on Tuesday at 4.15, session 275)

I infamously hate conferences (surely there must be a better way), but man HSS / ESHS is going to be fun this year. EVERYONE is going. Summer in Edinburgh. So much plant stuff (too much plant stuff). Reminder that early bird registration ends today! #histSTM #hss2026 #eshs2026
