USDA Ends Checkoff Funding for Climate, Carbon and ESG Initiatives
WASHINGTON (DTN) -- U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins is directing the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board to end dairy checkoff funding for projects advancing environmental, social and governance (ESG), net-zero and climate-neutrality initiatives, while ordering a review of all other checkoff programs for alignment with the policy. In a Sept. 17 letter to National Dairy Board Chair Lolly Lesher, USDA said the dairy checkoff must focus on "long-term value creation for future generations" and not fund activities advancing climate-neutrality initiatives. The decision follows legal action by the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL), which represents Wisconsin dairy farmers and sued the department over the use of checkoff funds for the programs. The lawsuit was dismissed when USDA disclosed its intention to amend the rules. Rollins said the move is aimed at ensuring "every dollar collected from American producers serves American agriculture for the better." But the policy also reverses farmers' decisions. Every expenditure made through a checkoff program is voted on by commodity producers and approved by USDA itself. The agency identified several initiatives as supporting ESG activities, including Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Environmental Stewardship, participation in Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, the U.S. Dairy Materiality...

Gold miners' $18.2B payout masks rising ESG pressures
Gold miners’ payments to governments surged 77% to a record $18.2 billion last year as stronger prices for the precious metal boosted fiscal contributions even as the industry struggled with rising emissions and energy intensity, according to Metals Focus. The Uk-based consultancy’s Gold ESG Focus 2026, published Monday, compares environmental, social and governance performance across 18 major producers. Local procurement rose by $1.7 billion to a record $30.8 billion, marking an eighth consecutive annual increase. “The financial contributions of the companies we track remained strong, with payments to governments rising 77% to a record $18.2 billion,” Sarah Tomlinson, director of mine supply at Metals Focus, said in a release. “Local procurement also reached a new peak of $30.8 billion, underscoring the sector’s vital role in supporting host economies.” The results show the growing financial contribution miners are making to host countries while highlighting a more uneven environmental picture. Investors are increasingly assessing ESG performance alongside risk, capital allocation and long-term value creation as extreme weather, political unrest and community relations pose threats to mine continuity. Emissions pressures Combined Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions were virtually unchanged in 2025 at 29,898 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, but average emissions...

Gold miners showing commitment to achieving ESG targets, says consultancy
The gold mining sector is showing resilience and commitment in tackling environmental challenges, supporting host communities and prioritising worker safety as it progresses on a more sustainable path, says precious metals consultancy Metals Focus in its ‘Gold ESG Focus 2026’ report. The report compares key environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics across 18 major gold miners to help provide a better understanding of these companies from an ESG perspective, alongside overall ESG trends in the gold mining industry. Additionally, this year’s report also touches on some of the initiatives that are ongoing within the wider industry, such as the London Bullion Market Association’s (LBMA’s) Responsible Gold Guidance and the Gold Bar Integrity programme developed by the LBMA and the World Gold Council. Metals Focus states that the ESG landscape continues to evolve as investors increasingly focus on demonstrable performance, risk management and accountability. Additionally, climate change, human rights and operational resilience are increasingly central to industry standards. The report details that, in 2025, extreme weather and political unrest halted processing or led to the suspension of operations at several gold mines, demonstrating how environmental and social risks can affect mine continuity and reinforcing the strategic importance of robust ESG frameworks...

Busting seven big myths about ESG investing - from greenwashing to returns
Despite its popularity, there’s still plenty of misinformation out there about ESG investing, what it is and is not. Here are seven of the most common myths debunked by ESG requires you to sacrifice returns Because ESG strategies sometimes provide lower absolute returns compared to otherwise equivalent traditional strategies, there is a widespread misunderstanding that sustainability considerations are harmful for investment performance. What we at EBI believe investors should really be concerned with is the amount of return their investment generated per unit risk they took on. ESG investment is about reducing exposure to a range of risks associated with environmental, social and governance issues. For example, companies which release higher volumes of greenhouse gases might be able to produce higher revenue in the short term, but are more at risk of regulatory intervention and changing consumer expectations over time. Similarly, corporations with poor board structure and a lack of accountability might perform well according to a quarterly financial report, but are inherently at larger risk of mismanagement, scandal and corruption. Thanks to the risks that sustainable strategies manage to avoid, the returns per unit risk are often stronger than those offered by non-sustainable investments. ESG is just greenwashing A...
