Extra: Of the roughly 17,000 people who stayed, approximately 5,000 died. The economic devastation was so severe that Memphis became bankrupt and, in 1879, lost its municipal charter, temporarily ceasing to exist as an incorporated city. #Victorian #history #epidemiology #Memphis #diseases

Also: Victims often developed high fevers, severe headaches, muscle pain, jaundice, internal bleeding, and the dreaded "black vomit." Some towns established armed quarantines, refusing entry to travelers and even turning away trains and steamboats. #Victorian #history #epidemiology #diseases

Additionally: No city suffered more than Memphis, Tennessee. As rumors of the approaching epidemic spread, tens of thousands of residents fled. Those with the means escaped by train or riverboat, while many poorer families had no choice but to remain behind. #Victorian #history #epidemiology

Additional Facts: At the time, doctors did not know that yellow fever was transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Instead, many believed the disease spread through "bad air," leading communities to burn sulfur, fumigate homes, and quarantine travelers. #Victorian #epidemiology #history

#episky #epidemiology 🧪 Trickle down anti-science. Abruptly cutting off funding will hobble public health at all levels throughout the United States and internationally. This is not about judiciously cutting waste throughout the government. This is a chainsaw massacre. www.gapha.org/annual-meeti...

For those who want a quick recap on #epidemiology: It was plumbing that ended the cholera epidemic, not drinking sewage to strengthen everyone's immune system. Thanks for coming to my #tedtalk.
