Aug update from ECMWF predictive ensemble is genuinely extraordinary from extreme #ElNiño perspective. One implication: it is now indicating not only 70-100% odds of above avg winter precip California-wide, but also 70-100% odds of DJF 26-27 being among the top 20% of wettest CA winters (!).
Map showing ECMWF ensemble DJF 2026-7 predicted precipitation by tercile status (i.e., most likely well above, well below, or near-average). All of the CA coast is painted the brightest color, indicating 70-100% odds of a winter among the wettest third of all historical winters.
Map showing ECMWF ensemble DJF 2026-7 predicted precipitation. All of the CA coast is painted the bluest color, indicating well below average odds of a winter in the driest 20% of all winters.

Come winter it’s gonna be as active as it gets in the US South, so unfortunately we pay the price for a quiet hurricane season. For perspective here’s where the other recent Super El Nino’s were by now: * 1982: +0.80°C * 1997: +1.50°C * 2015: +1.44°C * 2023: +1.04°C * 2026: +2.55°C #elniño #elnino

Någonting extraordinärt pågår i jordens klimatsystem just nu. Men just ingen utom några forskare verkar bry sig. #klimat #klimatkris #elniño

Water temperatures are warmer than normal (no surprise in this era), but there’ll be very limited windows in which hostile conditions aren’t present. Colorado State continues to forecast below-normal 2026 Atlantic #hurricane season: 9 named storms (including Arthur and Bertha), 4 hurricanes🌀 #ElNiño

As Nahel discusses below, this event was caused by an extreme downslope (foehn) wind event--but that, in turn, was amplified by very warm & moist airmass generating huge snowfalls in high elevation Andes due to record-warm ocean waters in eastern tropical Pacific. #ElNiño

I've never seen anything like it. Salta, Argentina, has just recorded its hottest night on record during the climatologically coldest time of the year. The minimum overnight temperature did not fall below 26°C (78.8°F), pulverizing the previous monthly record by 7°C.

The updated #ElNiño forecast from August is in from the NMME model ensemble. On this chart, I plotted the 8 prior Very Strong El Niños since 1850 such that the peak of the event is at month 0 then you go backward in time from whenever the peak was. [1/2]
