Sometimes called "Girl holding a basket of plums" or "Young Woman in a Broad-Brimmed Hat," this work displays van Everdingen's skill in the depiction of fabrics and still-life elements. Though its composition is relatively simple: an attractive good-humored young woman -- who is likely Dutch and a working girl -- stands before us against a blue, cloudy sky, viewed from a slightly low angle.

She is wearing an exotic broad-brimmed, disc-shaped hat, woven in a radial pattern with silvery and orange strips of fabric -- mostly worn by Romani women at the time, especially at the court in The Hague during costume parties and parades. The hat has ribbons to fasten it under the chin, but they are hanging loose. One has seductively snaked onto the girl’s exposed right shoulder.

Her white, silky, shimmering garment is reminiscent of the draped folds found in ancient Roman sculptures. The garment is fastened around her waist with a peach-orange sash, which flutters in the wind towards the left matching the peachy-orange color in the hat. The girl holds a small, intricately woven basket of plums with both hands. There is a backdrop of trees towards the bottom of the painting. Their position places the horizon very low so this painting could be hung high on a wall, above a door, or mantelpiece ... and explains why the girl looks down at us.

The use of light is striking: the broad-brimmed hat casts a shadow on the girl’s forehead, eyes and neck, and yet numerous reflections of light illuminate that part of her face. The line of her chin, the area around her eyes and parts of her forehead are indirectly lit. This powerful use of reflected light, in conjunction with the shadows cast by the brim of the hat, serves primarily to reinforce the impression of bright sunlight.

Girl with a Pearl Earring represents a young woman in a dark shallow space, an intimate setting that draws the viewer’s attention exclusively on her. She wears a blue and gold turban, the titular pearl or tin earring, and a gold jacket with a visible white collar beneath.

Unlike many of Vermeer’s subjects, she is not concentrating on a daily chore and unaware of her viewer. Instead, caught in a fleeting moment, she turns her head over her shoulder, meeting the viewer’s gaze with her eyes wide and lips parted as if about to speak.

Her enigmatic expression coupled with the mystery of her identity has led some to compare her to the equivocal subject in Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Unlike the Mona Lisa, however, Girl with a Pearl Earring is not a portrait but a tronie, a Dutch term for a character or type of person. A young woman might have sat for Vermeer, but the painting is not meant to portray her or any specific individual. There has been speculation that she is the artist's eldest daughter, Maria, though this has been dismissed as an anachronism by some art historians.

Vermeer’s subject is a generic young woman in exotic dress, a study in facial expression and costume. The work attests to Vermeer’s technical expertise and interest in representing light. The soft modeling of the subject’s face reveals his mastery of using light rather than line to create form, while the reflection on her lips and on the earring show his concern for representing the effect of light on different surfaces.
