After the picture description we will have tonight’s chilling tale….

Our B&W photograph is a narrow, old stone alleyway at night in the silent city of Mdina in Malta.

The walls on both sides are tall, weathered, and textured with centuries of age. A few small, dark windows break the monotony of the walls.

A single hanging lantern casts a pale glow mid-way down the passage, illuminating the rough stone and creating long, haunting shadows.

The alley curves slightly at the end, disappearing into deeper darkness and to finish, our picture is surrounded with a white border frame.

Now, for tonight’s tale of the macabre..

I call this….The Mummy of Mdina

The streets of Mdina were silent that night, save for the slow echo of something dragging its way along the cobblestones.

Inside the museum hours earlier, a crack had run down the glass of a sarcophagus said to hold the remains of Prince Khaemwaset,the “magician son” of Ramses II. No one saw the linen stir, or the dry fingers twitch free of their bindings. But when the moon rose high above Malta’s sandstone ramparts, the display case was empty.

Now, in the shadowed backstreets of the old city, the mummy shuffled onward, guided by something older than memory. Its wrappings fluttered faintly in the Mediterranean breeze, trailing dust older than the Crusader walls that loomed around it. The dim lamps flickered as it passed, as though recognizing what walked beneath them.

It paused before a narrow doorway carved into the stone, a doorway that seemed impossibly familiar. Beneath the layers of linen, the withered lips cracked open, whispering a name the island hadn’t heard in millennia.

Somewhere deep in the heart of Mdina, a bell tolled midnight. When the sound faded, the mummy was gone. Only the faint scent of myrrh and the rustle of sand remained, carried through the alley like a whisper from Egypt’s tombs.

And in the museum, the sarcophagus lid had closed itself.

'Some would say back in the day'

My dear,
some would say back in the day I was Quiet
but I was lost. I was scared... Oblivious!
fading into Fear.

why deny it
the lack of resilience
in stillness, was how I disappeared

looking back
I find Dread to be insidious
the way it curls its grip
into supercilious fists

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

once upon a time
in the wind
I was a young meager flame
running through the rain.
