From Wikipedia: The Dekalog is a 1989 Polish drama television miniseries directed by Krzysztof Kieslowsk and co-written by Kieslowski with Krzysztof Piesiewicz. It consists of ten one-hour films, inspired by the decalogue of the Ten Commandments. Each installment explores characters facing one or several moral or ethical dilemmas as they reside in an austere housing project in 1980s Poland.
My initial impression of Dekalog was "wow, a foreign-movie box-set. This will be a struggle." I admit, I sat on this one for a few weeks before I opened the packaging of the 837th spine from Criterion. The immediacy of my obsession with this catalog of films cannot be understated.
Though inspired by the Ten Commandments from the Christian Bible, Kieslowski's series never explicitly states this at any point during its run. The existence of God or a higher force is mentioned or hinted at a few times during the course of the series.
From an interview conducted by BFI for their Summer 1990 issue:
“They [Kieslowski and Piesiewicz] spent much time reading up as much as possible about the Old and New Testaments, as well as several commentaries on the Commandments themselves, before deciding to dispense with the information altogether. They were not setting out to be priests and wanted to avoid didacticism.”
All in all, a worthy film series that should be watched by anyone seriously considering themselves a cinephile of world cinema.
