According to Rafael Santos Torroella, one of the great Spanish artist Salvador Dalí scholars, between 1923 and 1926 the painter did at least a dozen portraits of his sister Anna Maria, including the two in the Museo Reina Sofía collection, this painting “Figura en una finestra (Figure at the Window)” and “Retrato (Portrait).” After they were shown in 1925 at the Dalmau gallery, certain critics, including Folch i Torres, linked Dalí’s portraits to Catalan Noucentisme.

According to Dalí himself in his book “The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí,” Pablo Picasso praised the pictures after his visit to the Dalmau gallery, and there is no doubt that they contain a certain echo of Picassian Classicism.

Figura en una finestra is perhaps the absolute masterpiece of the series of portraits of Anna Maria. Rafael Santos Torroella stated that the painting is “a marvel for the skill with which it combines the occupied spaces and the empty spaces, giving them equal compositional importance to such an extent that the fact that he has simply eliminated one of the window casements (the left one) escapes the viewer, who does not even notice the anomaly, despite the fact that this is precisely where so much of the enigmatic beauty radiating from the painting, with its pure serenity, resides.”

From behind, we see Anna Maria leaning out an open window (in a barren room) looking out at a coastal scene with a sailboat on the water. She is wearing a pale blue knee-length skirt and short-sleeve top and casual white shoes. Her dark hair has curly grey highlights. The window has grey/blue curtains which match her clothing.

First shown in color in the September 1935 issue of “Harper's Bazaar,” this painting testifies to Dalí's connections to the Parisian fashion and interior design scene. In the background is an allusion to Arnold Böcklin's “Die Toteninsel” (Isle of the Dead).

Sometimes called “Woman with a head of roses”, “Venus with the head of roses” or “Female Figure with head of flowers”, this peculiar female character was created in one the most creative time of Dalí’s career, when Dalí developed his personal interpretation of Surrealism and created some of his most celebrated works. This period of intense creativity corresponds with Dalí’s introduction to the André Breton’s Surrealist group and the beginning of his intimate relationship with his lifelong muse Gala who he married in 1934.

The painting “Femme à la tête de roses” contains ordinary, symbol-laden objects that defined Dalí’s dreamlike work. This painting is one example of Dali’s use of substitution of heads with other objects.

For some art historians, flowers in this painting represent a distaste for rich people that was common among the Surrealist group. For others, the piece is influenced by elegant fashion illustration and design, especially in regards with the second woman in the painting, facing the main protagonist. Another interpretation, cohesive with other works by Dalí at the time, is related to sexual symbolism. Roses can not only symbolize femininity but also female sexuality.

Several sketches and lithograph of the “Woman with the head of roses” from the 1930s can be found, but this is the 1935 painting acquired by the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1964.
