Anthropic copyright settlement: tax information for non-US citizens

Robin recently received an email about their claim in the Anthropic copyright settlement, with instructions to review their claim, and check that the allocations were correct. They did that, but when they came to submit the information, it asked for an SSN or TIN. Since we’re not in the US, Robin doesn’t have either of those. They left those boxes blank, but the website warned that doing so could delay payment. They then emailed the settlement administrator to ask what they should do. A reply arrived yesterday, and we’re posting the information here in case it helps anyone in a similar situation. If you have a claim in the Anthropic copyright settlement and you are _not_ in the USA, download and fill in a W8-BEN form: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw8ben.pdf When filling it in, make sure you enter dates in the MONTH-DAY-YEAR format. Parts I and II of a completed W8-BEN form If you’re in the UK, put your Unique Taxpayer Reference in box 6a. In part II, put that you are a resident of **United Kingdom** , claiming provisions of Article and paragraph **12(1)** to claim a **0** % rate of withholding on **book income**. You will need to print the PDF, sign it, and scan it. If you don’t have a printer or scanner, your local library should be able to help.
