Bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin (1888) representing a classical caryatid, normally standing upright and bearing her burden for eternity. Here she has collapsed, pressed down by the weight of the heavy vessel she carries. It was originally titled ‘Sorrow’. #ClassicalReception 1/
Fallen Caryatid Carrying an Urn, originally titled Sorrow, was considered by Rodin and his contemporaries as among his best compositions. Unlike the standing caryatids (female support figures) of classical tradition, Rodin’s version folds into herself, compressed beneath the weight of the vessel she carries. In another large variant, the caryatid bears a massive rock that the poet Rainer Maria Rilke metaphorically described as the "burden . . . from which we can find no escape."

Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917), bronze with some gilt, after 1900. Cast by Eugène Rudier (1875-1952), Paris, by 1918.

#ClassicalReception ‘A Coign of Vantage’ (1895) by Lawrence Alma Tadema. The imagined scene shows elite women gathered at a great height gazing down at the vessels on the water far below or out towards some far (presumably azure) horizon. #AncientBluesky🏺
Oil painting of three women. Two are in pastel colours, the third in a medium green. Their clothes are voluminous and draped in a (not strictly accurate) homage to ancient Greco-Roman dress. They appear to be overlooking the sea from a great height and there are mountains in the distance. The bright colours suggest a summers day.
