The Yellow Cruise (La Croisière Jaune) was a famous, ambitious and heavily-publicised 1931–1932 trans-Asiatic automotive expedition from Beirut to Beijing organised by André Citroën to promote his company's half-track vehicles and chart the historic Silk Road.

Under the guise of a scientific and cultural expedition, prestigious researchers and artists took part such as Joseph Hakin, the curator of Guimet Museum; André Reymond, the naturalist; Alexandre Iacovleff, the painter; and Father Teilhard Chardin, the geologist.

André Citroën and expedition leaders refused her entry on the grounds that they did not want female participants in the male-dominated convoy. Citroën firmly stated that he did not want women on the dangerous expedition.

Being barred only fuelled Ella Maillart's determination to explore Central Asia independently. Instead of discouraging her, Citroën's sexist refusal directly motivated Maillart to prove she could conquer the exact same treacherous terrain on her own terms.

Her personal connection to the expedition remained evident throughout her life. In her meticulously detailed personal travel journals and mapped logs, she explicitly traced and reference-marked the path of the Citroën expedition.

This expedition was designed to demonstrate the capability of Citroën's vehicles in extreme terrain, such as deserts and mountains.

The large cylinder mounted to the front of the vehicles is an unditching roller, designed to help the cars climb over obstacles or prevent digging into soft ground.
