Teen pilot of Channel crossing with 165 migrants sentenced to two years in prison

A 19-year-old South Sudanese national, Chan Mathok Atak, has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison for endangering others during a sea crossing of the English Channel with 165 migrants on board. The incident occurred on 23 July 2026, when Atak piloted a 12.8ft wide and 46.9ft long dinghy, which was severely overcrowded with 31 children among the passengers, including a 14-year-old. The vessel, described as a 'mega dinghy', had limited food, water, and medication, with inadequate lifejackets and a considerable fire risk due to batteries being placed near fuel cans. The National Crime Agency (NCA) reported that the boat had been at sea for almost 24 hours and was deflating when intercepted by border force vessels. Atak admitted to endangering others during the crossing, which was the 16th conviction under a new offence introduced in January 2026 for targeting those who steer small boats across the Channel. Prosecutors highlighted that the boat's size and the number of people on board presented an obvious danger, with the vessel being unstable due to deflation. Atak attempted to avoid identification as the helmsman by moving away from the engine and removing his jacket, but aerial footage showed him piloting the vessel using the remaining functioning engine. The NCA stated that Atak's actions were 'unimaginably reckless' and could have resulted in many deaths had the boat not been intercepted. The court heard that Atak paid €200 to a smuggling gang for the crossing but denied being the helmsman. Defending counsel argued there was no evidence linking Atak to the overcrowding or safety issues of the boat. The case marks the 16th conviction under the new offence, with the Minister for Border Security and Asylum describing Atak as an 'evil criminal' and emphasizing the ruthless tactics used by smuggling gangs to exploit desperate people for profit. Judge Sarah Counsell stressed the seriousness of the offence, stating that only an immediate custodial sentence could be justified, and warned Atak that as a foreign national he was liable for automatic deportation upon completion of his sentence.
