NOR CRYSTAL TEARS (1981) Acrylic - 30" x 19” A favorite theme of mine is the depiction of human-alien interactions. This book deals with the subject so wonderfully that I wanted to make it the focus of attention for the cover painting. 1/4 #bookssky #art 🪐📚
A woman with short dark hair reaches out to a mantis-like alien. The fingers of her hand match the long slender digits of the alien as they touch. There is an embossed gold star on the alien’s shoulder, and it wears a furry covering overs its lower legs. Traces of snow can be seen on that fur as well as on the cuff of her green puffer jacket and branches of vegetation barely seen in the lower right foreground. The background of the painting, however, is loosely painted in greens and yellows, populated with silhouettes of branches and tree trunks. A barely visible structure resembling an alien city can be seen on the distant horizon as framed by the alien’s cautiously extended appendage and the woman’s arm.

Cresting a ridge, two explorers take in the view of an ancient, alien city nestled in an arctic mountain range. Intricate spires rise out of a mist of windblown snow. Between the angled peaks of mountains, the sky radiates aurora-like waves rendered in white and gray-blue.

The immediate foreground is saturated red, a contrast to the rough blue seas outside. On the shore of a lake, a red-headed woman in Romani-style garb approaches a dragon twice her height. Orange scaled, its sinuous neck curves as it lifts a beak shaped head. Gripping rock with hind legs and forelimb, its tail swishes water as wings flair back warily. A flame pattern ripples along the underside of the limb supporting its wing. More gold scales run under its chin down its belly and along the underside of its tail. The woman wears a purple silk cloth over her hair with pink cloak trailing. The sleeves of her azure blouse puff out until they meet form fitting leather gloves at the elbow. Her belt broadens in the back, accented with chains and jewels. Her silky pants are also baggy until they tuck into her fine leather boots at the calf. In the distance, other dragons can be seen bathing in the shallows. Lush evergreens give way to grassy hills and eventually angular mountains that thrust upward aglow in the sunlight.

Against the black of night, a faceless demon crouches on the ledge of a balcony, pausing to stare straight forward with one arm dangling down. The crown of its head is peaked with three smaller spikes surround a long horn positioned to gore. Its wings fold behind as the arrow tip of a barbed tail teases into view. Another demon scrabbles for purchase sinking claws into the stone as its head emerges over the ledge. The immediate foreground is an elongated checkerboard pattern of cracked tile rendered in gray and black like the rest of the art.

Filling the gap between valley walls, a divine female figure with 8 arms and a serpent tail glows an ethereal yellow tinting the sky orange around her. Six arms fan behind her with the fingers of each hand locked in a different arcane gestures while her most prominent arms cross over bare breasts. One of the Hani carries a shiny chrome blaster and another is talking into a handheld communication device. Many have rings adorning the underside of their pointed ears. THE DARK TOWER: KA-TET (2003) Oil on Panel - 28” x 18” Throughout the Dark Tower series, Stephen King portrayed Roland's group of fighters, known as the Ka-Tet, as a circle. 1/2 #bookssky #art #DarkTower
In the gruesome aftermath of the Battle of Devar-Toi, Roland huddles with his Ka-Tet, circling with arms reaching out to each other. Strewn about the bricked street are corpses of Vampires and Low Men, the latter depicted with various animal heads. They lay still, an afterthought of the violence reaped by the now joyous gunslingers. Susannah is seated on her bronze, balloon-wheeled ATV. An army star is painted on the fender. Jake and Roland stand in profile with the striped billy bumbler Oy straddling their arms. The high angle view of the Ka-Tet centers on Eddie Dean, who faces front, smiling for the moment. He stands out in his light blue shirt, unbuttoned to expose a darker t-shirt beneath and the shiny buckle of his gun belt.
