Some Beppu beers

### While in Beppu for just a couple of hours yesterday (a story for another post!) we stumbled across the Beppu Brewery. And obviously, I had to take a peek - and beers - inside. The place has a lovely ambience - all concrete and nice lights - and a great selection of beers. It took me far too long to make up my mind and opt for a flight of three small beers, to maximise my tasting opportunities! My flight of beers… I opted for a flight made up of: * Yugari Pils - surprisingly delicious! 10/10 * Kabosu Saison - fruit, sour and warming? 8/10 * Oni IPA - surprisingly low on taste 5/10 As I’m an IPA fan, and we still had 45mins before w head to leave for our training back to Fukuoka, I quickly scanned the menu and opted for a pint of the only other beer with IPA after its name. Only after my first couple of sips - and the ensuing goosebumps on my arm and wide-eyed stare - did I re-check the menu and find that I’d ordered a 9% beer. While delicious, I really had to ensure I didn’t gulp it! Pure (strong) deliciousness All gone, good boy! Even if we didn’t have a train reservation, I think I’d have had to leave it at this point. Or order some food. The Volcanic Cloud was beginning to kick in… In more positive news, it helped me sleep for a good chunk of the long train journey back to Hakata Station! A quick glance at the available merch - including some great stickers, which I now regret not buying - and it was time to head back up the hill for our train. I have to say Beppu is the first place I’ve visited in Japan that I wouldn’t race back to. Totally subjective, but it feels very tired, with lots of closed shops and restaurants, and a sense that it’s past its prime. Beppu Brewery stood out as a modern and new venue, in stark contrast to everything around it! So if I do ever find myself back in Beppu, I know where I’ll be going for lunch. I’ll just make sure to read the beer menu a little more carefully next time…
